The advent of the internet came with many advantages and disadvantages; however on the whole, it’s tough to imagine life and work without the world wide web at our finger tips. It’s enabled communication and information to be shared with millions of people irrespective of time, geography, finances and commitment and this is where the challenges lies…
The study of communication has taught us that around 70% of our message is communicated via body language, 20% via tone of voice, etc and around 10% by our actual words.
Then there are the immeasurable and less known qualities such as energy exchange, aura, vibration, light and the like that are measured by kurlion photography, feel, individual physiological response, etc. In you reading this, the reality is you’re missing 90% of the true communication exchange…
And in reading anything online, you’re missing around 90% off the message. Most of the time I believe this is a blessing with the absolute bullshit most people write online and attach their self worth/esteem too!
For example, did you know strength training actually makes you weaker? Speed training makes you slower and endurance training lowers your work capacity! Don’t believe me?
Pick any quad dominant training session and do it in full, wait 10-15mins then test your 3RM squat. You’re weaker as a result of the strength training – period. Or go for a 60min run, rest for 10-15mins then do a beep test. You’re work capacity is lowered due to endurance training – period. (Fyi, this method of testing is how flexibility gets a bad wrap re: ‘making you weaker’ not to mention the mindlessness of the ‘methods’ researches use…)
In the above examples you’re only getting 10% of the message and intuitively most would have a good idea on what would compromise the remaining 90% (a lot of putting it in context!)
The internet, email, written word and talking via phone are all valuable but it’s not until I get into your space and you get into mine that real exchange often takes place for things of practical nature – training!
This doesn’t need to happen immediately or all the time, but it does need to happen at some point. I’ve read forum entries by members that read exceptionally well, yet in person ‘other traits’ are revealed. Not good or bad, just other factors in the equation are learnt. In person, we each get the exchange 100%... There is a huge different in what people say and what people do!
Getting together in person also requires effort, often getting out of one’s comfort zone, and being willing let go or empty your cup so you can take in what you need. Nothing can be added to a full cup!
It’s in person you’ll learn how to think instead of what to think...
